Can anyone recommend a red wine that is not too sweet like a zinfandel but not too strong?

April 29th, 2010

I’m a new wine drinker and don’t know anything about wine. I would like something that is sweet enough for my non-wine drinking palette. And does 1 glass a day really have any health benefits?

Try Merlot, I bet you’ll really enjoy it….

Try a Sangria. Maybe it too will be too sweet but maybe not. It is milder than a zinfadel and not strong. Over the years everything that I have either heard or read points to one or two glasses of wine having health benefits.

I’m assuming you’re speaking about white zinfandel, which typically does carry "bright fruit and sweet" characteristics. If you’re looking to begin drinking wine a good place to start would be a Sauvignon Blanc for whites or Pinot Noir for red.

Sauv Blancs typically display a lot of citrus notes but have a low residual sugar content so you won’t get the "sweet" flavor.

Pinot Noirs really depend on where the grapes are grown, but they are usually a softer, medium bodied wine that goes very well with food due to there acidity.

There have been a number of studies that seem to point towards a glass of red wine being positive to your health. I remember seeing a report on 60 minutes that said they’ve identified the agent in red wine that supposedly increase longevity. The concensus was that you would have to drink a ridiculous amount to truly make a difference in your health.

    Drink it up yum!

Depends on where you are, you can get differnt types of wine that are suitable. Probably best to walk into a shop and ask for suggestions.

For me, a dolcetto (Italian – nice and off-sweet), or a beaujolais (French – light, fruity style) would be worth a try. Alternatively, a well-made rose (although not a proper red wine).

    Enjoy!

I would recommend a Pinot Noir. They are usually soft and fruity and are very food friendly also.
