BYO (Build Your Own) Wine Cellar
March 12th, 2010
There comes a time in your life as a wine enthusiast when you take a leap and decide that you are ready to buy more than just one bottle of a wine you have taken a liking to. It strikes each of us – we get bitten by the wine bug and we want to store some extra bottles for another day.
There are many good reasons for wanting to cellar wine you enjoy. We discover a wine we enjoy, and when we return to purchase another bottle we discover that it is sold out and the winery has no more stock .
Good wine, unlike most other consumer products, is a finite commodity for each particular vintage. So when you unearth a wine you enjoy it makes good sense to acquire 2-3 extra bottles of the wine and then suitably store them so that they maintain their quality, and can age gracefully while waiting to be drunk.
To make sure you can keep your wine in primo condition while being cellared you need to manage the humidity and temperature in order to ensure the aging process for the wines being cellared is constant and free from significant changes. The best cellar I have found that meets this goal is a BYO (Build your Own) Wine Cellar – either a single cabinet model that can hold 160 bottles, or a dual cabinet version that is capable of holding 320 bottles of wine.
Is capacity for 320 bottles enough storage capacity for your needs? Well unless you are throwing massive dinner parties every other weekend with 40-50 people arriving at a time, believe me when I say this is plenty of storage capacity.
I made the mistake a few years back of building a huge wine cellar in my house that could hold in excess of 2500 bottles of wine. As my wine knowledge increased so I began acquiring more and more wine in order to stock my huge cellar until it reached the stage that I could not consume the wine fast enough before some wines would decrease in quality through over aging. I later sold my house and the next owner did exactly the same thing I did! You don’t require wine storage capacity for 3000 bottles of wine is the point that I am making! A BYO deluxe wine cellar can be bought inexpensively and assembled within your current living space with little or no hassle.
First things are to determine the amount of wine you are realistically going to cellar, then check your living space for a suitable location probably in your living room, dining room, or your den – and no renovations are required.
Best wine glasses for Pinot Noir & Burgundy
March 12th, 2010
Pinot Noir, or Burgundy as it is known in France, is rapidly one of the most in demand red wines by wine experts and wine enthusiasts alike.
A serious Pinot Noir is a wine that is problematic to make, and even harder to produce into outstanding wines. When however you get an opportunity to taste an incredible Pinot Noir it becomes a goal to then find another and another. Yes, it turns into an addiction! That word is too strong I fear, perhaps more an obsession for Pinot Noir. And, to satisfy that obsession having the best glassware for tasting Pinot Noir is very important, in order to experience all the subtleties that a good or great Pinot Noir has to offer.
The mystique and degree of difficulty to produce extraordinary Pinot Noir has caused this rapid increase in Pinot Noir demand globally. The French process of blending a number of Pinot Noir wines to make a completed wine known as Burgundy (all of the Pinot Noir is required to be harvested and produced in the Burgundy region to gain this classification) has in many wine experts opinions been surpassed by the New world wineries of New Zealand, Australia, and USA of course, all of whom are making sensational single vineyard Pinot Noir wines and are having outstanding success at wine competitions and in wine sales.
In my opinion Riedel Pinot Noir glasses are the number one glasses for drinking Pinot Noir. They are perfectly designed to deliver the Pinot Noir to your palate so that the wine hits the taste buds that are bestset up to receive the flavor. The crystal used is of the very best quality and provides you an unobstructed vision of the many colors of the wine, which you may well be aware can unearth a lot about the quality of Pinot Noir.
The fact that wine connoisseurs, wine industry professionals, and serious wine enthusiasts so frequently own Riedel red and white wine glassware is an endorsement of their market leadership as the best wine glasses for tasting Pinot Noir. professionals on some occassions will be tasting several hundreds of wines over a range of a few days. They base their reputations on the requirement to be able to identify all the flavors they can, as soon as they taste a Pinot Noir wine.

Thinking about investing in fine wine as an alternative investment?
When selling fine wine purchased as a potential alternative investment, one of the first things any potential buyer will do is confirm its provenance, implicitly asking the following questions: •How do I know these wines are of a satisfactory quality? •Where did they come from? •Have they been looked after carefully? •Is there a paper trail to confirm all of this? If standard provenance requirements are not met, the opportunity for profit when selling is significantly reduced. This alternative investment video is brought to you by Provenance Fine Wines and illustrates some key guidelines relating to the concept of provenance. Provenance Fine Wines create and/or manage portfolios of superb quality wines, produced by some of the most highly regarded vineyards in the world.

Wine Collecting Is One Of The Best Financial Investments You Can Make Right Now
March 11th, 2010
There are some oddities that go on in the wine market. It is essentially a luxury product and yet millions of bottles are produced each year.A few people’s personal taste can mean life or death for a wine and they can flow in and out of popularity almost weekly. One thing is certain though, there is a lot of money to be made from wine and now is a better time than ever to invest.
Fine wine prices have been rocketing upwards for many years now. As wineries continue to perfect their production methods and develop better storage facilities, the prices people pay for fine wines has crept up. Sotheby’s wine expert Jamie Richie even said “Prices had risen to nearly unsustainable levels last spring”.Having said this, now that we find ourselves in a very weak economy, these fine wine prices are starting to come down to realistic levels. January 2009 saw a relatively big downturn in prices averaging 1.2% according to Liv-Ex 100, the tracking index for the top 100 collectible wines. This is trend that experts expect to continue for while and can in fact be seen throughout the wine sector, from wine production to the sales of general shot glasses.
At a recent auction in Chicago, a bottle of 1978 Montrachet Domaine Romanee-Conti sold for $3,783. $23,929 was the price paid for that same wine only a couple of years previous at Sotherby’s auction. This sharp decline means that if you’ve ever wanted to start your own wine collection, either for your own consumption or as an investment, it will soon be the right time. Experts think that the market will be at its lowest point by the end of the year, after which it will start to pick up again slowly. Tableware and drinking accessories are expected to improve as well.
Joss Fowler from Berry Bros and Rudd is a wine investment guru and he has some pearls of wisdom to share. A Red Bordeaux is a pretty sound bet according to him, mainly because it very rarely ages badly. Also, always go for the best vintage and don’t scrimp on cost, get the best you can possibly. Stick to this adage and you’ll be filling up your wine racks before too long.
The Art Of Wine Tasting
March 10th, 2010
Among people who enjoy tasting wine, it is referred to as simply tasting. Wine tasting consists of analyzing different kinds of wine using his or her senses. It has become very popular today and even has special terminologies and can be termed as a profession. Most people in the business will agree that wine tasting is an art that allows participants to gain a greater appreciation for the various wines and winemakers as well.
Wine tasters limit the art of tasting to four main tastes. They are bitter, sour, salty and sweet. Wine can be just one of these, or a combination of multiple tastes. Wine tasting is characterized by the effect of both tasting and smelling the wine.
How Wine Tasting Is Done
Tasting is a fairly easy art and can be done at home or at a wine tasting party. The wine’s color and clarity, taste, and smell are the most critical components of wine tasting. To determine the color and clarity of the wine, simply pour a glass of wine and hold it up in front of a white background and examine the wine. You should primarily be looking at the glass from the top to the middle.
If you are examining red wine, then look for maroon, brown, or purple traces. If it is a white wine, the colors to look for are yellow, green, amber, brown or gold. In addition, professionals check for traces of sediments in this stage by tilting and swirling the wine glass.
During the wine tasting process, smell is very important. The correct way to smell wine is by swirling the glass in order to eradicate some of the alcohol smell. It is important to smell the wine in a whiff in order to get the aroma that first strikes out. Next, in order to detect any distinct scents such as vanilla, citrus, flowers, or berries, the taster will place their nose slightly inside the glass and take a deep breath.
The real wine tasting process has to incorporate tasting the wine. What is known as the ‘attack phase’ involves sipping the wine and using your tongue to roll it around. Here, the first impression of the wine is registered.
The following phase of the process is what’s known a the evolution phase. This involves the discernment of the wine’s flavor profile. The final stage is called the finish and this is calculated by how long the taste of the wine will be retained in the mouth after swallowing. Wine tasting enables a person know whether they want more of the wine or if it was too strong or bitter for their liking.
