I also have a 1999 bottle of cabernet Merlot from Hogue Cellars which is a Washington St. (columbia valley)wine. How much are they worth? When is their peak and should be opened?
Really, if you want to honor that tradition and do it that way, call the vintner.
Call the winemakers and ask them what they suggest and when they think the wine will be at it’s best.

What is it about merlot you like? If you like the smoothness of it, you might also try some Pinot Nior, it’s allot easier to find good ones

I just bought a bottle of Merlot out of curiosity, got a corkscrew and tasted the wine. It has a watery and dry taste. Is this normal?
I paid nearly £16 for an imported bottle from California.
One of my favourite reds. It should be dry, but it shouldn’t be watery. French Merlot-based wines usually have medium, soft velvety body and a hint of plum and/or blackcurrant.
However, it appears that, in California, Merlot-based wines can range from very fruity simple wines (sometimes referred to by critics as a "red Chardonnay") to more serious, barrel aged examples.
I suspect that you may have bought one of the former. Sometimes with wines, you don’t get what you pay for.
My advice would be to stick to the French ones. The DOC ones are the best, of course, but even the "Vin de Pays" ones I’ve had, whilst lighter than the DOCs, have still retained the core taste, bouquet and body.
My girlfriend and I need a red wine to pair with our meal tonight. Normally I’m good when it comes to pairing but I haven’t experienced a lot of Chiantis and I know she isn’t crazy about Merlot. What are the differences between Merlot and Chianti and are there any better options I could pair with chicken, pasta, and red sauce?
Merlot is a red grape used to produce the wine, Chianti is produced in the Chianti region of Italy, The main grape used is a Sangiovese grape, But it is also usually blended with other grapes….
