What’s the difference between Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wine?
November 21st, 2009
They are made from different grape varieties, the Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc. There are literally thousands of different varieties used for making wines and they all hav etheir own characteristics
Chardonnay is an easy grower, rather bland which means it can be tweaked by the winemaker to different styles. With malolactic fermentation and some oak treatment you get the fat buttery flavoured wines that were popular in California. Or you can make it steely flinty dry, like from its home in Chablis, France.
I love Sauvignon Blanc. It can make a wild exciting wine – as some one once said "like cat’s pee on a gooseberry bush". Although its home is Bordeaux — where it is also made into some of the planets sweetest and most expensive wines in Sauternes and Barsac — for me the gooseberry acidic wines from New Zealand and South Africa are what Sauvignon Blanc is about.

Chardonnay is dry and Sauvignon Blanc is a sweeter. And unlike what someone on this board said "One is red, the other white", they BOTH are white.
