Cherry Pie Pinot Noir

March 7th, 2010

Cherry Pie is another innovative offering from visionary winemaker Jayson Woodbridge, creator of Hundred Acre and Layer Cake Wines. One would think with the myriad winemaking projects that literally take him and his winemaking team around the globe several times each year, that Jayson would be content with his current stable of wines…but he has yearned to make Pinot Noir for years and circumstances finally aligned for him to do just that.

Jayson sought out the owners of Stanly Ranch, on the Napa side of the Carneros appellation, as their
grapes were becoming well known as some of the most sought after Pinot Noir grapes in California. They
told him they would give him a small allocation to make wine, but future allocations would depend on the quality of the wine he made. They had no idea that was just that kind of challenge that puts Jayson at his best.

After tasting the 2007 Cherry Pie Pinot Noir from the barrel, and deeming it one of the best ever made from
their grapes, the owners of the ranch granted him free rein to choose from the very best blocks of the
property for his wine. Needless to say, the allocation of fruit is now whatever he asks for…but the wine still had no name. Then in early 2008 while perusing New Yorks Soho District, Jayson happened into the Campton Gallery during its exhibition of paintings by artist, TR Colletta. Collettas richly detailed paintings of everyday, distinctly American objects are at once familiar and remarkable, assuming an evocative, sculptural character. His subjects tap into our collective consciousness and become complex metaphors. Jayson was particularly drawn to a compelling oil on canvas of a juicy, mouthwatering, hot-out-of-the-oven cherry pie. He instantly knew this was to be the label and the name for his Pinot Noir still in the barrel – Cherry Pie.

O’Brien Estate – “O, Merlot!”

November 27th, 2009

O’Brien Estate winery began with a romantic dream: Twenty years ago, Girl say’s to boy, “let’s go to Napa Valley on our third date.” Boy takes girl to Napa Valley. Girl say’s to boy, “I dream of having a vineyard here one day.” Boy adds to his “to do” list. Girl persists. Man endeavors. Eleven years later, dream comes true! Girl swoons. Girl is happy..man is happy too!

Bart and Barbie O’Brien have been operating their 33 acre vineyard in the Oak Knoll district of Napa Valley since the year 2000, when they bought their vineyard and bottled their first wine under the O’Brien label.

They make small production, handcrafted wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Oak Knoll district. They use only sustainable farming practices and afford low yields and wide-spaced rows in their vineyards. This provides the level of rich and concentrated fruit usually only found in mountain vineyards.

Their grapes are harvested by hand, crushed and fermented in small batches then aged in 100% French oak barrels.

Seeing how Barb and Barbie are both hopeless romantics, they’ve created a portfolio of poetic wines and include them all in a beautiful gift set. With names like Flirtation, Attraction, Romance of the Heart, Seduction and Reflection, these wines are full of hope and promise and each comes with an original poem on the back label.

The Oak Knoll district is becoming famous for their Merlot! The “O” in O’Brien makes a perfect license plate sentiment that is no truer to one’s heart (or car) than Barbie’s..”O, Merlot!”..right Barbie?

O’Brien Estate offers a very personable experience allowing you to sip wines in their back yard overlooking the vineyard. Bart is often there to talk “wine” with, and they’re happy to give you a tour of their facility.
