Beaulieu Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
May 26th, 2010
A classic Rutherford Cab with full violet-ruby color and distinctive local aromas of black cherry, dark olive and mineral, combined with hints of smoky oak and blackberry. The fine flavors echo the nose. Medium acidity and body plus supple tannins. With a fine balance between alcohol, fruit and tannin, this young wine already drinks well and will support 6-10 years aging.

April 2nd, 2010
Twenty Valleys Winter WineFest adds some sparkle to a winter favourite.
There is a new reason to venture out on a chilly January weekend this year.29 reasons, in fact. Visitors to the NEW Winter WineFest will be able to sample over 50 wines from 29 area wineries, and this year icewine will share centre stage with some of Ontarios best sparkling and premium VQA wines.
The not just icewine festival which will be hosted in Jordan Village January 16 and 17th will allow wine enthusiasts to sip and savour from a list of specialty and reserve wines not offered at any other wine festival.
The shift away from the traditional Icewine Festival was one of the first changes implemented by the Twenty Valley Tourism Association when they took over the management of the event this November. The Jordan Ice Bar has been very successful, but we wanted to create something that is distinctly Twenty Valley an event that better showcases the variety of premium wines available here, says Dori Andrewes, Event Manager for the Twenty Valley Tourism Association. Many of our most celebrated and popular wineries dont offer icewine and werent able to be a part of past events. It makes sense to put our best wines on display, and to highlight the range of talent in Twenty Valley.

CABERNET (STAGS LEAP DISTRICT)
April 2nd, 2010
Welcome back to ThatFOODandWINEshow. This episode focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley, California. Cabernet Sauvignon remains California’s most popular wine varietal and therefore, its most important grape. California Cabs are typically big, bold, tannic table wines that are best paired with rich dishes such as steak. Of course, this may not always be the case when taking into account such variables as where the fruit comes from, vintage, winemaker crafting, etc. Today’s episode showcases one wine from the Stags Leap District. Stags Leap acquired its reputation in 1976 when a Stags Leap Cabernet, judged blind by a French panel in France bested all of its competition. Since then, California wines have been considered world-class.
The featured wine on today’s show was Alterra Winemaker’s Reserve Stags Leap Cabernet – 2006 vintage. This wine was elegant in style with flavors of currant, plum and raisin nicely integrated with hints of cedar and tobacco. Mild in acidity, tannic structure and sweetness, this wine does not require the assistance of a big steak to be enjoyed. I scored this wine 84 points — however it was not disappointing. Stags Leap cabernets are typically more costly than what I found this one for ($20.00 US) so if you can find a good bargain, its worth the investment to see if its your cup of tea.

Cherry Pie Pinot Noir
March 7th, 2010
Cherry Pie is another innovative offering from visionary winemaker Jayson Woodbridge, creator of Hundred Acre and Layer Cake Wines. One would think with the myriad winemaking projects that literally take him and his winemaking team around the globe several times each year, that Jayson would be content with his current stable of wines
but he has yearned to make Pinot Noir for years and circumstances finally aligned for him to do just that.
Jayson sought out the owners of Stanly Ranch, on the Napa side of the Carneros appellation, as their
grapes were becoming well known as some of the most sought after Pinot Noir grapes in California. They
told him they would give him a small allocation to make wine, but future allocations would depend on the quality of the wine he made. They had no idea that was just that kind of challenge that puts Jayson at his best.
After tasting the 2007 Cherry Pie Pinot Noir from the barrel, and deeming it one of the best ever made from
their grapes, the owners of the ranch granted him free rein to choose from the very best blocks of the
property for his wine. Needless to say, the allocation of fruit is now whatever he asks for
but the wine still had no name. Then in early 2008 while perusing New Yorks Soho District, Jayson happened into the Campton Gallery during its exhibition of paintings by artist, TR Colletta. Collettas richly detailed paintings of everyday, distinctly American objects are at once familiar and remarkable, assuming an evocative, sculptural character. His subjects tap into our collective consciousness and become complex metaphors. Jayson was particularly drawn to a compelling oil on canvas of a juicy, mouthwatering, hot-out-of-the-oven cherry pie. He instantly knew this was to be the label and the name for his Pinot Noir still in the barrel – Cherry Pie.
